Fahrenheit to Celsius Converter

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiply by 5/9. 32 °F = 0 °C, the freezing point of water, and 212 °F = 100 °C, its boiling point at standard atmospheric pressure.

The scales cross at -40: -40 °F = -40 °C.

How to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

Formula: °C = (°F - 32) × 5/9

Order matters: subtract 32 first, then multiply by 5/9. Multiplying first and subtracting 32 afterwards gives a wrong answer, because the offset belongs to the Fahrenheit value, not to the result.

Worked example: 77 °F to Celsius

This result is complete, not rounded.

Convert 77 °F

Input

77 °F

Output

(77 - 32) × 5/9 = 25 °C

When you need to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

  • US weather forecasts and thermostats read in Celsius: 68 °F = 20 °C and 86 °F = 30 °C.
  • Cooking: a US recipe at 350 °F is 176.666666667 °C.
  • Room temperature: 77 °F = 25 °C.
  • Body temperature context: 98.6 °F = 37 °C. This page only converts the number and does not interpret a reading medically.

Things worth knowing

  • Recipes often round oven temperatures: 350 °F is commonly written as 175 or 180 °C, while the exact conversion is a little different. The difference rarely matters in a kitchen.

To go the other way, use the Celsius to Fahrenheit Converter, which applies °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. For any other pair of units, open the Unit Converter, or browse every unit converter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9. For 77 °F, (77 - 32) × 5/9 = 25 °C.

What is 32 °F in Celsius?

32 °F = 0 °C, the freezing point of water.

Why do I subtract 32 before multiplying?

The Fahrenheit scale puts the freezing point of water at 32, while the Celsius scale puts it at 0. Subtracting 32 first lines the two scales up at that point, and the 5/9 then adjusts for the different size of a degree.

What is a quick way to estimate Celsius?

Subtract 30 and halve the result. For 68 °F that gives 19 °C, against an exact 20 °C. The estimate gets less accurate the further you are from room temperature.
