Celsius to Fahrenheit Converter

Multiply the Celsius temperature by 9/5 (that is, 1.8), then add 32 to get Fahrenheit. Unlike length or weight, this is not a single multiplication: the two scales also start at different points, so the 32 matters. 100 °C = 212 °F, the boiling point of water at standard atmospheric pressure.

-40 is the one temperature where the two scales agree: -40 °C = -40 °F.

How to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit

Formula: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32

Zero degrees Celsius is the freezing point of water and is 32 °F on the Fahrenheit scale. A change of 1 °C is a change of 1.8 °F, so converting a temperature difference uses the 9/5 but not the 32.

Worked example: 25 °C to Fahrenheit

This result is complete, not rounded.

When you need to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit

  • Weather: a forecast in Celsius read on a Fahrenheit thermometer, or the other way round when travelling.
  • Cooking: an oven recipe at 180 °C is 356 °F.
  • Room temperature: 20 °C = 68 °F and 25 °C = 77 °F.
  • Body temperature context: 37 °C = 98.6 °F. This page only converts the number and does not interpret a reading medically.

Things worth knowing

  • Converting an oven temperature does not adjust for a fan oven. If a recipe gives separate fan and conventional temperatures, convert the one that matches your oven.

To go the other way, use the Fahrenheit to Celsius Converter, which applies °C = (°F - 32) × 5/9. For any other pair of units, open the Unit Converter, or browse every unit converter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply by 9/5 (1.8) and add 32. For 25 °C, (25 × 9/5) + 32 = 77 °F.

Why is -40 the same in Celsius and Fahrenheit?

Set both scales equal in the formula: x = (x × 9/5) + 32. Rearranging gives x × 4/5 = -32, so x = -40. It is the only temperature where the two readings match.

What is a quick way to estimate Fahrenheit?

Double the Celsius value and add 30. For 20 °C that gives 70 °F, against an exact 68 °F. The estimate drifts further from the true value the hotter or colder it gets.

What is 0 °C in Fahrenheit?

0 °C = 32 °F, the freezing point of water.

Is a 1 degree change in Celsius the same as in Fahrenheit?

No. A change of 1 °C equals a change of 1.8 °F, because there are 180 Fahrenheit degrees between freezing and boiling and 100 Celsius degrees.
