Tip Calculator
Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people, and the calculator shows the tip, the final bill and what each person pays. There is no Calculate button: the figures update as you type, and Copy Summary gives you the same numbers as plain text.
Two things matter more than the percentage buttons. A receipt total often already contains tax or a service charge, so the calculator never adds those again; if you enter them, they only change how much of the bill the tip is based on. And a split never loses a cent: when the total does not divide evenly, a few people pay one cent more and the shares add up to the exact total. It is a mathematical utility, not advice on how much to tip.
Runs in your browser. Tip Calculator processes your input on your own device. Nothing you enter or upload is sent to a server.

(opens in a new tab)How to use the Tip Calculator
- Type the bill: the total printed on your receipt, with a period for cents, such as 84.50. If it already includes tax or a service charge, leave them in.
- Choose 10%, 15%, 18%, 20% or 25%, or type your own percentage in the custom box. Typing a custom value does not change the bill or the number of people.
- Set the number of people with the + and โ buttons, or type a number from 1 to 100.
- Read the tip, the final bill and the amount each person pays. Below them, the breakdown explains every figure, including how any odd cents were shared out.
- Optional: switch on rounding up to raise the final total to the next whole amount. The difference is counted as extra tip and shown on its own line.
- Optional: open Advanced options if the receipt shows tax or a service charge that is already inside the bill, then choose whether the tip is worked out on the bill without them or on the entire bill.
- Select Copy Summary to copy the result as text, or Reset to start again. The currency menu changes the symbol only.
Supported formats: Money is typed as digits with an optional period and at most 2 decimal places, such as 84 or 84.50, up to 999999.99. Commas, spaces, currency symbols, negative numbers and scientific notation are rejected rather than guessed. The tip percentage is from 0 to 100 with at most 2 decimal places, and the number of people is a whole number from 1 to 100.
How to calculate a tip
A tip is a percentage of an amount, called the tip base. Multiply the base by the percentage and divide by 100. Add the tip to the bill to get the final bill.
18% of $84.00
Input
$84.00 ร 18 รท 100
Output
Tip $15.12. Final bill $99.12
20% of $50.00
Input
$50.00 ร 20 รท 100
Output
Tip $10.00. Final bill $60.00
15% of $10.00
Input
$10.00 ร 15 รท 100
Output
Tip $1.50. Final bill $11.50
Tip amounts for common bills
These tips are worked out on the whole bill and rounded to the nearest cent. Add the tip to the bill for the final amount. They are arithmetic, not a recommendation: how much to tip depends on the country, the kind of service and your own judgment.
| Bill | 15% | 18% | 20% |
|---|---|---|---|
| $20.00 | $3.00 | $3.60 | $4.00 |
| $25.00 | $3.75 | $4.50 | $5.00 |
| $30.00 | $4.50 | $5.40 | $6.00 |
| $40.00 | $6.00 | $7.20 | $8.00 |
| $50.00 | $7.50 | $9.00 | $10.00 |
| $75.00 | $11.25 | $13.50 | $15.00 |
| $100.00 | $15.00 | $18.00 | $20.00 |
| $150.00 | $22.50 | $27.00 | $30.00 |
How to work out 15%, 18% and 20% in your head
Start with 10%, which is the bill with the decimal point moved one place left. The other percentages are built from it. Using a bill of $84.00, 10% is $8.40.
- 20% is double the 10% figure: $8.40 ร 2 = $16.80.
- 15% is the 10% figure plus half of it: $8.40 + $4.20 = $12.60.
- 18% is 20% minus 2%, where 2% is a fifth of the 10% figure: $16.80 โ $1.68 = $15.12.
How to split a restaurant bill
To share a bill equally, add the tip to the bill and divide by the number of people. That is simple when the answer lands on a whole number of cents, as it does for $84.00 with an 18% tip between 3 people: the final bill is $99.12 and each person pays $33.04.
It often does not. A $10.00 bill with a 15% tip between 3 people comes to $11.50, and $11.50 รท 3 is $3.8333. Rounding every share to $3.83 would leave a cent unpaid, and rounding every share up to $3.84 would collect a cent too many. So the calculator shows what actually works: 2 people pay $3.83 and 1 person pays $3.84, which adds up to exactly $11.50.
This splits the final bill equally. It does not divide a bill by who ordered what.
How penny-accurate splitting works
All money is handled as whole cents, never as decimal fractions, so no cent is created or lost by computer arithmetic. Two rules apply, and the same rules run every time.
A split with leftover cents
Input
$100.00 bill, 20% tip, 7 people
Output
Final bill $120.00. Each share starts at $17.14, which leaves 2 cents over, so 2 people pay $17.15 and 5 people pay $17.14. In total, $120.00
An exact half cent
Input
$10.10 bill, 15% tip
Output
15% of $10.10 is $1.515, rounded up to $1.52. Final bill $11.62
- A tip is rounded to the nearest cent, and an exact half cent rounds up. For example, 15% of $10.10 is $1.515, which becomes $1.52.
- The final bill is shared out by giving everyone the whole-cent average rounded down, then handing the leftover cents out one each to the first people in the list: Person 1, then Person 2, and so on. There are always fewer leftover cents than people.
Tip before or after tax
Some people base a tip on the bill before tax and some on the whole total, and neither is the only correct choice. The calculator makes the choice visible instead of making it for you.
The bill you type is the receipt total, and it already contains the tax, so tax is never added a second time. If you also enter the tax that is included, the tip is worked out on the bill minus that tax. You can instead choose to tip on the entire bill.
Tip left off the tax
Input
$84.00 bill that includes $4.00 tax, 18% tip
Output
Tip base $80.00. Tip $14.40. Final bill $98.40
Tip on the entire bill
Input
The same $84.00 bill, 18% tip, tip on the entire bill
Output
Tip base $84.00. Tip $15.12. Final bill $99.12
What an included service charge means
Some receipts add a service charge automatically. Whether that charge is a gratuity that goes to staff, a fee kept by the business or something else differs from place to place, so the calculator does not assume either way. Check your receipt, or ask, before deciding whether to add more.
If you enter a service charge as already included, it is treated like included tax: it is not added to the bill again, and by default it is left out of the tip base. If the service charge already covers the tip, choose 0% and the final bill stays the same as the receipt.
Service charge left out of the tip base
Input
$120.00 bill that includes an $18.00 service charge, 10% tip
Output
Tip base $102.00. Tip $10.20. Final bill $130.20
How rounding up affects the total tip
Rounding up raises the final total (the bill plus the tip) to the next whole currency unit. The difference is extra tip, so it is shown on its own line and added to the total tip. It is never a saving. If the total is already a whole amount, nothing is added. Rounding happens before the bill is split, so the shares add up to the rounded total.
Rounding up
Input
$61.00 bill, 15% tip, rounding up
Output
Tip $9.15 makes a total of $70.15, which rises to $71.00. The extra $0.85 is round-up gratuity, so the total tip is $10.00
Already a whole amount
Input
$80.00 bill, 25% tip, rounding up
Output
Tip $20.00 makes exactly $100.00, so nothing is added
Rounding up, then splitting
Input
$61.00 bill, 15% tip, rounding up, 4 people
Output
Final bill $71.00, so each person pays $17.75
Things worth knowing
- The split is equal. It cannot divide a bill by who ordered what.
- Amounts are limited to 999999.99 with at most 2 decimal places, so currencies without cents, such as the yen, are not supported.
- A period is the only decimal mark. Commas, spaces and currency symbols in an amount are rejected rather than guessed, and so is a % sign in the percentage.
- Tax and service charge are amounts you copy from the receipt. The calculator does not work out tax or look up tax rates.
- The currency menu changes the symbol only. It never converts between currencies.
- The tip percentage can be from 0 to 100 with at most 2 decimal places, and the number of people from 1 to 100.
- It is a mathematical utility, not tax, legal or etiquette advice.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate an 18% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.18. On $84.00 that is $15.12, so the final bill is $99.12. Type the bill and choose 18%, and the calculator shows the tip and the total straight away.
How much is a 20% tip on $50?
$10.00, which makes a final bill of $60.00. A 20% tip is the bill ร 0.20, or double the 10% figure.
How much should I tip?
There is no single right answer. Tipping customs differ by country, by the kind of service and by the venue, and the percentage buttons are common starting points, not recommendations. Use the amount that suits the service and the place.
Does the bill amount include tax?
The calculator treats the amount you type as the receipt total, whatever it contains, and never adds tax to it. If you enter the tax already included in the bill under Advanced options, it is left out of the tip base by default, and you can switch to tipping on the entire bill.
Is a service charge the same as a tip?
Not necessarily. A service charge on a receipt may or may not be a gratuity, and that differs between places. Check the receipt before adding more. The calculator never assumes that a service charge is, or is not, a tip.
How do you split $10 with a 15% tip between 3 people?
The tip is $1.50 and the final bill is $11.50. Divided by 3 that is $3.8333, which cannot be paid exactly, so 2 people pay $3.83 and 1 person pays $3.84. The three shares add up to exactly $11.50.
What does rounding up do?
It raises the final total to the next whole currency unit and counts the difference as extra tip, shown on its own line. A total of $71.20 becomes $72.00, and the extra $0.80 is gratuity. A total that is already whole is not raised.
Does choosing a currency convert my amount?
No. The currency menu (USD, GBP, EUR, CAD or AUD) only changes the symbol shown. Nothing is converted and no exchange rate is used, so the calculation is the same in every currency.
Is anything I enter sent to a server?
No. All the calculation happens in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
