Which text tool do you need?
Seven small tools, each aimed at one fiddly job. Start from what you are trying to fix or produce.
| Tool | Use it to | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Word Counter | Check text against a word or character limit | Shows characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs, and estimates reading time. |
| Remove Line Breaks | Fix text copied from a PDF, or turn a list into one line | Replaces every line break, including the ones between paragraphs, so paragraphs merge. |
| Case Converter | Fix capitalization | UPPERCASE, lowercase, Title Case, Sentence case, Capitalize Each Word, alternating and inverse case. |
| Email Extractor | Pull addresses out of pasted text, a .txt file or a .docx file | Finds text shaped like an address and does not check that the mailbox exists. Exports TXT, CSV or JSON. |
| Text to Slug | Turn a title into a URL-friendly slug | One line at a time. Only Latin letters and digits survive. |
| Lorem Ipsum Generator | Fill a layout with placeholder text | Generates paragraphs, sentences or words. |
| Text Repeater | Repeat a string a set number of times | Useful for test data and for seeing how a layout wraps. You choose the separator. |
Cleaning up text copied from a PDF
A PDF stores text line by line, so copying it usually brings a hard line break at the end of every visual line. A sensible order for fixing it:
- Paste the text into Remove Line Breaks, replace each break with a space and switch on Trim extra whitespace.
- Remember that every break is replaced, including the gaps between paragraphs. For a document with several paragraphs, clean one paragraph at a time, or restore the paragraph breaks by hand afterwards.
- If the text arrived in capitals, run it through the Case Converter.
- Check the length with the Word Counter if you are writing to a limit.
Other common text jobs
- Writing to a length: the Word Counter reports characters both with and without spaces, because platforms measure differently.
- Preparing a page address: fix the capitalization if you need to, then run the title through Text to Slug. It deletes symbols rather than spelling them out, so a title like "C++ vs C#" loses the characters that carried the meaning. For arbitrary text that has to travel inside a URL unchanged, use the URL Encoder and Decoder instead.
- Collecting addresses from a pasted thread: use the Email Extractor, then join the list onto one line with Remove Line Breaks if you need it comma-separated. Extracting an address is not permission to email it.
- Mockups: the Lorem Ipsum Generator gives you varied, realistic-looking filler, while the Text Repeater gives you one exact string over and over, which suits test data and stress-testing a layout.
Common questions
Is the text I paste stored or sent anywhere?
No. All seven text tools run in your browser. The one detail to know is that the Email Extractor fetches an open-source Word reader from a public CDN the first time you upload a .docx file, then reads the document on your device. The document itself is not uploaded.
What is the difference between Title Case and Capitalize Each Word?
Title Case lowercases the whole text first and then capitalizes the first letter of each word. Capitalize Each Word only raises the first letter of each word and leaves the rest as you typed it. Neither follows publishing style rules that keep short words like "and" or "of" lowercase.
Can I upload a document?
Only the Email Extractor takes files, and only .txt and .docx. Every other text tool works on text you type or paste.
